Flowers for Tolland, CT

Graduation weekend at UConn empties every flower cooler within ten miles of Storrs, and Tolland — fifteen minutes up Route 195 — feeds that surge every May. The rest of the year the town runs quieter: a hilltop green nearly half a mile long, ringed by the 1822 county courthouse, the old jail museum, and clapboard houses that have watched two centuries of front-porch deliveries. Most weeks the routes are simple. Birthday stems go to the subdivisions off Merrow Road, a housewarming basket lands near Crandall Park, and winter arrangements travel double-wrapped against the wind that scrapes over the exposed hilltop.
