About Simi Valley get-well

How Simi Valley sends get-well flowers.

Most get-well pages start with the ward. This one starts with the map, because in Simi Valley the map decides everything else. The city has exactly one hospital: Adventist Health Simi Valley at 2975 North Sycamore Drive, up off Sycamore on the north side of the 118, and it handles a great deal of what a valley of 125,000 people needs — the emergency department, surgery, maternity, the ordinary admissions. What it does not handle travels, and the direction of travel depends on the problem. East over the Santa Susana Pass on the 118 lies Northridge Hospital Medical Center on Roscoe Boulevard and West Hills Hospital & Medical Center on Medical Center Drive, which is also where the Grossman Burn Center sits. South-east down De Soto is Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills on De Soto Avenue, and along the boulevard, Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana on Clark Street. West, by way of Moorpark and the 23, is Los Robles Regional Medical Center on West Janss Road in Thousand Oaks, the larger hospital on the Ventura County side, with its east campus in Westlake Village. Out at the county seat is Ventura County Medical Center on Hillmont Avenue. Children with anything serious generally go further still, to the paediatric centres in Los Angeles. So before you choose flowers: find out which building, and which unit inside it.

The Sycamore Drive campus, in the detail that saves a runner twenty minutes. It is set back off Sycamore with medical office space around it, and the front visitor entrance is not the same door as the various suites on the site — so the useful instruction is the unit name plus the room number, not the department. Give us both and the flowers go up on the first attempt. One thing worth settling before you order at all: patients can opt out of the facility directory, and plenty here do, in which case reception is not permitted to tell a courier whether they are in the building. That is the purpose of opting out, not an obstruction. Get the room from the family rather than expecting us to find it, and if nobody will give it to you, put the order on the house they are being discharged to and have it standing there when they walk in.

Here is the thing this valley does to a get-well delivery that other cities do not, and it has nothing to do with hospital policy. Four of our five benches are on the far side of a ridge — Canogapark Florist at 7144 Owensmouth Ave, Woodlandwarner Flowers at 21212 Ventura Blvd, Abbey's Flowers at 22037 Ventura Blvd, Asunshine Florist at 5909 Kanan Rd. in Agoura Hills — and the run between there and a bed in Simi Valley goes up over the pass or the long way round through Moorpark. In July, August and September the inside of a delivery vehicle on that climb at two in the afternoon is an oven, and the arrangement that arrives limp did not fail on the ward, it failed in the van. The fix is the booking rather than the bouquet: take a morning slot, and ask for stems that do not sulk in heat — carnation, stock, alstroemeria, lisianthus, hardy chrysanthemum, gerbera, solidago. Soft open blooms and hydrangea do not survive this particular commute in summer.

What actually gets turned away at a nurses' station, and why each refusal is reasonable. Anything in the lily family goes first: the anthers shed a rust-coloured pollen that transfers to a gown or a pillowcase and does not wash out, and the perfume fills a two-bed room where the person in the other bed has no way of leaving it. Height and footprint come next. The over-bed table is contested square footage — a water jug lives on it, so does the handset, so does the call button, and so does lunch at noon — so the arrangement that earns a place is squat, bottom-heavy and not glass, because glass tips the first time somebody slides a tray across. Fragrance is third, enforced hardest on the units where nobody can walk out of the room to escape a smell: intensive care, surgical recovery, any bay with an infusion running. Latex balloons are the surprise. They are refused as an allergy matter at campuses right across this radius, so the balloon comes off at reception and only the flowers go up. Mylar travels. If the unit is oncology or intensive care, call the floor before you order and ask what they will accept today — the answer can change by the week.

Now the address most people should have chosen in the first place. Simi Valley's admissions do not stay in Simi Valley, and the person having the worst fortnight is often not the patient. When a bed is at Northridge on Roscoe or at Los Robles on Janss, the spouse or the adult daughter is driving the 118 over the pass, or the 23 down to the 101, twice a day for two weeks — parking, cafeteria coffee, the same twenty-minute climb at dusk. A vase on that person's kitchen table in 93063 or 93065 does more good than one more arrangement on a windowsill the patient vacates on Thursday, so decide who the gift is really for before you choose the address. The same logic covers outpatient work: a procedure over the hill that sends somebody home by mid-afternoon does not want flowers that day, it wants them two or three mornings later when the adrenaline has drained out and the house is quiet. And for any home delivery here, remember what this valley's sun does to a west-facing step after three — book it before the heat, tell us who is certain to be in, or nominate the neighbour who can take it indoors.

Delivery details to prepare

Delivery destinations in Simi Valley.

Adventist Health Simi Valley, 2975 North Sycamore Drive

The city's only hospital, set back off Sycamore on the north side of the 118, with medical office space around it. The visitor entrance is not the door to every suite on the site, so the unit name plus the room number is what gets an arrangement upstairs on the first attempt.

Northridge Hospital on Roscoe Boulevard + West Hills Hospital on Medical Center Drive

The two campuses straight over the Santa Susana Pass, and where a serious case from the east end of the valley most often goes. West Hills also holds the Grossman Burn Center. Both are close to three of our five benches, which makes the run into them shorter than the run home.

Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills, De Soto Avenue + Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana, Clark Street

The De Soto and Ventura Boulevard end of the radius, reached down the 118 and along the boulevard. Two benches sit on Ventura Boulevard itself, so these are short local runs — send the unit name, and ask the floor first if the patient is on oncology or intensive care.

Los Robles Regional Medical Center, West Janss Road, Thousand Oaks

The larger hospital on the Ventura County side, reached through Moorpark on the 23 rather than over the pass, with an east campus in Westlake Village. This is the drive that turns a visiting spouse's fortnight into a commute, which is why so many of these orders end up addressed to a house instead.

Ventura County Medical Center, Hillmont Avenue + the Los Angeles paediatric centres

The far ends of the referral map. The county hospital sits forty minutes west at the coast, and children with anything serious generally travel into Los Angeles. Both are cases where the family is left in Simi Valley and the useful delivery is the one that meets them at home.

Home recovery across 93063, 93065 and Brandeis 93064

Where most of this category actually lands. A west-facing step in Wood Ranch or on the Big Sky slope takes full sun from three o'clock, so book mornings, ask for weighted ceramic, and give us a gate code for Wood Ranch or a landmark for the Santa Susana Knolls lanes.

FAQ

Simi Valley flower delivery FAQs.

Which hospitals can you reach from Simi Valley?

Most of what this valley uses. In the city, Adventist Health Simi Valley on North Sycamore Drive. East over the Santa Susana Pass: Northridge Hospital Medical Center on Roscoe Boulevard and West Hills Hospital & Medical Center on Medical Center Drive, where the Grossman Burn Center is. South-east: Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills on De Soto Avenue and Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana on Clark Street. West through Moorpark: Los Robles Regional Medical Center on West Janss Road in Thousand Oaks and its Westlake Village east campus. Ventura County Medical Center on Hillmont Avenue sits at the far end of the county. Send the campus, the unit and the room.

What will a nurse hand back?

Four things, dependably. Anything in the lily family, because the anthers drop a rust-coloured pollen that transfers to a gown and never washes out, and because the scent fills a two-bed room the other patient cannot leave. Height and glass, since the over-bed table is already carrying the water jug, the handset, the call button and, at noon, a tray. Perfume, on intensive care, on surgical recovery and in any bay with an infusion running. And latex balloons, refused as an allergy matter at every campus here — mylar travels. Ask instead for carnation, stock, alstroemeria, lisianthus, gerbera or hardy chrysanthemum, built squat and bottom-heavy.

The patient is at Northridge or Los Robles but the family is here. Where should the flowers go?

To the family, far more often than senders expect, and it is the one line on this page worth acting on. Simi Valley sends its complicated cases out of the valley, which means somebody is driving the 118 over the pass or the 23 down to the 101 twice a day for a fortnight — parking structures, cafeteria coffee, the same climb home at dusk. The patient will leave that room on Thursday; the caregiver will still be exhausted next week. A vase on a kitchen table in 93063 or 93065 frequently does more than another arrangement on a hospital sill. We deliver to both addresses, so decide first who the gift is actually for.

Does the heat here change what I should send?

More than the ward rules do, honestly. Four of our five benches are on the far side of a ridge, and the run into Simi Valley climbs over the Santa Susana Pass or loops through Moorpark. At two in the afternoon in August the inside of that vehicle is brutal, and an arrangement that arrives limp failed on the drive rather than on the floor. Book the morning slot, ask for carnation, stock, alstroemeria, lisianthus, chrysanthemum or gerbera, and avoid soft open blooms and hydrangea between July and early October. Weighted ceramic also beats glass, for the van as well as for the table.

Plant or cut flowers for a get-well?

It depends where the gift will end up living. A kalanchoe or a succulent garden is a long object — it is still on a windowsill next spring, which is the right gift for someone facing weeks of recovery at home. Cut flowers are the bright immediate version, and for a two-night admission that is usually the honest fit. One constraint: a number of units say no to live potting soil while happily accepting a vase, so a plant belongs at the house rather than in the room. And a thin nursery pot cannot be parked on a Simi Valley step in September — put that one into a window when the door will be answered.

Someone had outpatient surgery over the hill and is home this afternoon. When should flowers arrive?

Not today. A procedure at one of the campuses across the pass usually has people home by mid-afternoon, flattened and in no state to admire a vase. The hard day tends to arrive second or third, once the immediate business is done and the house has gone quiet. Book a late-morning window then, keep it scent-free in case nausea is lingering, and pick a low weighted vessel somebody can move one-handed from table to sill. Small genuinely wins here — a big arrangement turns into another chore.

What does a get-well arrangement cost in Simi Valley?

The listed arrangements in this selection start at $45.49. Delivery charges, taxes and optional extras are confirmed for the selected florist and recipient before payment.
