Saratoga punches far above its size on anniversary night, and the reason is a single stretch of pavement. Big Basin Way, the Village end of Highway 9, carries the Plumed Horse — a Michelin-starred dining room — within a few doors of La Fondue, whose whole format is a two-hour table for two, plus Hachi Ju Hachi's small kaiseki-style room and Bella Saratoga's Victorian-house patio. People drive up from San Jose, Cupertino and the Peninsula for those tables, park at an angle on the street, and walk. That is charming and it is also the practical problem with anniversary flowers: a bouquet delivered into a fifty-seat dining room during service has nowhere to go. Staff are carrying plates through a narrow aisle, and the vase ends up behind a host stand until you leave. Unless you have arranged it with the restaurant yourself and have a name to hand it to, send flowers to the house in the morning and let the evening be the evening.
The house is where most of these orders belong anyway, and Saratoga's housing splits into two delivery problems. The flat quadrant north and east of Highway 85 — Fruitvale Avenue, Allendale, Cox Avenue, Quito Road, the Prospect Road blocks — is straightforward: curb, path, doorbell. Above the Village the roads climb into the Santa Cruz Mountains foothills on Pierce Road, Mount Eden Road, Montalvo Road, Bohlman Road and Congress Springs Road, where driveways run a few hundred feet, gates are common, and house numbers are not readable from the pavement. For an anniversary that matters twice over, because timing is usually the point: you want the bouquet on the kitchen island before your partner leaves for work, or waiting when they get home, and neither happens reliably at a gate. Send the code and a mobile number, ask for a morning window, and if the surprise depends on your partner not seeing the delivery, say that in the notes — a runner who knows will call you rather than the recipient.
The rest of the local anniversary map is venue-shaped and mostly not staffed for parcels. The Mountain Winery on Pierce Road, the old Paul Masson estate, runs an outdoor concert season with the whole valley laid out below the terrace, and a great many Saratoga couples mark an anniversary at one of those shows. Montalvo Arts Center on Montalvo Road, the Mediterranean villa built by former San Francisco mayor and US senator James Duval Phelan, stages performances in its Carriage House Theatre and keeps grounds and trails open by day. Hakone Estate and Gardens above Big Basin Way is a hillside Japanese garden older than most of the houses around it. The wineries on Mount Eden Road — Cooper-Garrod and Mount Eden Vineyards — and Savannah-Chanelle up Congress Springs Road are the Santa Cruz Mountains tasting stops closest to town, and the Saratoga Country Club sits on Prospect Road. None of them has a hotel-style front desk that will hold a vase of water for six hours. Treat them as where you are going, not where flowers should land. The one in-town hotel is the Inn at Saratoga on Fourth Street, tucked just off the Village above Saratoga Creek; nearby the Toll House Hotel and Hotel Los Gatos sit in downtown Los Gatos, and the Juniper Hotel is on South De Anza Boulevard in Cupertino.
