Who actually receives these is the interesting part, because just-because volume in Santa Clarita skews older and more neighbourly than in a dense city. A great deal of it goes to parents and grandparents in the long-settled Newhall and Canyon Country tracts, to Friendly Valley, the 55-plus community off Sierra Highway with its guard kiosk at the entrance, and to residents connected to the senior services clustered on Golden Valley Road. Another slice is thank-you work: a teacher at one of the William S. Hart Union High School District campuses, a Saugus Union or Newhall School District elementary office, a coach at Central Park or the Sports Complex, a church volunteer, a neighbour who watched the dog for a week. And a genuine share is housewarming, because this valley keeps building — Skyline Ranch in Saugus, Tesoro del Valle and West Creek up in 91354, Vista Canyon on the east end — which means somebody in your life is always three weeks into a new address and has nothing on the kitchen island yet.
The recurring obstacle is that the house is empty. Santa Clarita is a commuter valley: a large share of residents drive over the Newhall Pass to Burbank, the San Fernando Valley or downtown Los Angeles on I-5 and State Route 14, or ride the Metrolink Antelope Valley Line from the Newhall, Santa Clarita or Via Princessa stations, and they are gone from before nine until well after six. With no deadline to honour, you have options nobody else on this site gets. Send on a Saturday morning instead of a weekday if the recipient works in town. Send to the workplace, where a staffed counter signs for it — the Tourney Road and Town Center Drive offices, the Valencia Industrial Center and Rye Canyon business park, Santa Clarita Studios on Anza Drive, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital on McBean Parkway. Or name a shaded porch, a side gate or a neighbour in the delivery note. What you should not do is leave it to chance in July, when an unattended arrangement on a sunlit step has perhaps two hours before it stops being a gift.
