Most cities in this ring borrow their florists from a neighbor. Ontario does not have to. Roger's Flower Shop works out of 413 North Euclid Avenue in 91762, a few blocks up the historic boulevard from Holt, and Ontario Florals works out of 800 South Milliken Avenue Suite D in 91761, in the middle of the industrial grid east of the airport. Those two addresses describe Ontario better than any map legend: one sits in the 1882 Model Colony grid where the streets are shaded and the houses have front steps, the other sits where the tilt-up buildings, the air-cargo ramps and the truck gates are. A birthday order in this city goes to one world or the other, and the shop that picks it up is usually the one already pointed that direction.
Ontario delivers to three street ZIPs, and knowing which one you are sending into settles most of the guesswork. 91762 is west and central Ontario — the downtown blocks around Euclid Avenue and its enormous landscaped median, the older residential streets running off Euclid, Vine, Lemon and Palm, the Holt Boulevard corridor, and everything out to Mountain Avenue and the Montclair line. 91764 is north of Interstate 10: Ontario Mills at One Mills Circle, Toyota Arena on Ontario Center Parkway, the Ontario Convention Center on East Convention Center Way, the hotel and office row along Inland Empire Boulevard and North Haven, and the residential streets stepping north toward the Rancho Cucamonga border. 91761 is the largest and the strangest — it takes in Guasti, the old Italian Vineyard Company village on the southeast side, the airport's south perimeter, the Milliken and Archibald warehouse belt, and then keeps going south past Riverside Drive into Ontario Ranch, the 8,200-acre New Model Colony annexation where dairy pasture has been turning into subdivisions since the mid-2010s.
The desk half of Ontario's birthday volume is unusually large for a city this size, because Ontario holds far more jobs than households. Ontario International Airport on East Airport Drive anchors it — the UPS West Coast air hub and the Amazon Air gateway on the field run around the clock, and the airline, freight-forwarder and ground-handling offices around the perimeter are ordinary delivery addresses. Citizens Business Bank keeps its corporate headquarters on North Haven Avenue. The Convention Center and Toyota Arena employ shift crews on event days. Ontario Mills is one of the largest retail buildings in California and its back-of-house offices take deliveries through a service entrance rather than the mall doors. Ontario City Hall sits at 303 East B Street, the Chaffey Joint Union High School District offices are downtown, and the Ontario-Montclair School District runs one of the biggest K-8 operations in the state from West D Street. For all of those, a compact arrangement in a low vase is the right call: it has to clear a monitor, ride an elevator or a forklift aisle, and sit in air conditioning for four hours without wilting.
