Modesto's hospitals do not sit together, and that single piece of geography decides which of our seven benches builds your order. Doctors Medical Center is at 1441 Florida Avenue in the middle of the city's west-central grid; it runs the trauma service for this region, which means the serious orchard, dairy, highway and processing-plant injuries in Stanislaus County arrive there rather than anywhere else. Memorial Medical Center is two miles east at 1700 Coffee Road, on the Briggsmore side, with the cancer and infusion services on that campus. Kaiser Permanente Modesto Medical Center is north at 4601 Dale Road, out past Pelandale near the Vintage Faire end of town — and unlike some valley markets, Kaiser members admitted in Modesto are admitted right there, in that building, which removes the single most expensive mistake a sender can make. Stanislaus Surgical Hospital is at 1421 Oakdale Road, a short specialty campus for planned procedures. Doctors Behavioral Health Center sits east on Claus Road. At the edges of the 18-mile radius, Emanuel Medical Center covers Turlock on Delbon Avenue and Oak Valley Hospital covers Oakdale on South Oak Avenue. Community Hospice's Alexander Cohen Hospice House is in north Modesto, and the Sutter Gould clinics, the Golden Valley Health Centers sites and the VA's Modesto outpatient clinic handle the outpatient side. Three main campuses in three different quadrants: ask which hospital before you order, because in this city the answer changes the route, not just the address.
Then ask which unit, because the unit decides the build. Cancer and infusion care is the tightest brief on this grid: no lilies of any variety, nothing that sheds pollen, no perfume, and on a good many units no living soil either — which is a shame, because a plant is the gift that would still be alive in April. Intensive care and much of cardiac step-down does not take flowers into the room at all, so the honest plan there is a handoff downstairs to whichever relative is holding the waiting room. Behavioral health, the Claus Road campus included, keeps glass, wire, ribbon and anything with a point off the unit entirely; send a low unbreakable container or send nothing. Maternity and post-surgical are the easy wings and will take almost anything. What senders underestimate everywhere is the furniture: the only surfaces in the room are a bedside table already carrying a water jug and a phone, and a windowsill behind the monitor cables. Ask for something short — fourteen inches is the practical ceiling — in a vessel that will not break. Stems that pass on every floor in this county: alstroemeria, lisianthus, spray roses, carnations, gerbera, solidago and plain greenery. And put the patient's whole name and the ward on the order, because a unit clerk has no way to match a first name to a bed, and if the patient has opted out of the facility directory, nobody at the desk is permitted to confirm they are even in the building.
