The second fact catches people out constantly: Upstate is two hospitals. The downtown campus on East Adams is the academic one, with Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital inside it and the Upstate Cancer Center on the same block; Upstate Community Hospital is a separate campus at 4900 Broad Road on Onondaga Hill, roughly six miles west, out past the county's other Onondaga Hill institutions. A card that says only Upstate can arrive at a building the patient has never been in. Write the campus. The same care pays off at Crouse, where the Kienzle Family Maternity Center and the regional newborn intensive care unit take their deliveries on different terms from the general floors, and at St. Joseph's, where the outpatient and physician buildings are not the hospital tower. Room number, unit name, and the patient's full name as it is registered — that is the whole checklist, and it is the difference between a delivery and an hour of a volunteer's day.
Then the unit rules, which are set by the floor and not by us, so the reliable move is to ring the nurses' station before choosing rather than after. The oncology and transplant floors around the Upstate Cancer Center are the strictest on this hill: pollen-heavy stems get turned back, and potted soil is refused on some of those units outright, which rules out the plant that would otherwise have been the sensible gift. Crouse's newborn intensive care unit generally takes nothing into the unit at all, so the arrangement goes to the parents' waiting area or, better, to the house. Intensive care at Upstate and the VA works the same way in practice. Behavioral health floors will not accept glass or wire. And Golisano, being a children's hospital, applies its own rules ward by ward. When the floor says no, the answer is not a smaller bouquet — it is the family's home address, which in this county is very often back in Liverpool anyway.
