Lincoln has been making things that outlast people for a hundred and fifty years. The Gladding McBean works has been firing clay on the west side of town since 1875, and its terra cotta is still holding up cornices on buildings in San Francisco and Sacramento that were finished before anyone now living was born. It is a fitting industry for a town whose anniversary orders skew the way Lincoln's do. In most cities the anniversary page is written around the fifth and the tenth; here the fiftieth is ordinary and the sixtieth is not unusual, because Sun City Lincoln Hills filled up with couples who arrived already three decades in. They did not get married in Placer County — they got married in the Bay Area, in Southern California, in the Midwest, in another country — and they came here afterwards, which means the anniversary flowers are almost always ordered by an adult child or a grandchild who lives somewhere else. That shapes the order in ways worth planning for. The sender usually does not know the recipient's daily routine, so tell us in the notes if there is a golf morning, a class at one of the lodges or a standing lunch; a late-morning drop is the safest default in a community where most people are genuinely home during the day, but a couple that has been retired for fifteen years is often busier than the person sending the flowers.
Where the celebration happens matters more for anniversaries than for any other occasion here, because the venues are spread out and none of them behaves like a restaurant reception desk in a city. Thunder Valley Casino Resort on Athens Avenue is the only hotel of any scale in Lincoln, and a room in its tower is where a large share of local anniversary nights are spent — deliveries need the guest's registered surname, and you should expect the arrangement to be held and delivered to the room rather than left outside a door. On the Twelve Bridges side of town, Catta Verdera Country Club sits above the neighbourhood of the same name, Turkey Creek Golf Club is out on the Highway 65 side, and the Lincoln Hills course runs through the Del Webb community itself; all three take a dinner-table arrangement if you give the club a name, a booking time and a phone number. Wise Villa Winery, out on Wise Road in the rolling ground east of town, is the Lincoln entry on the Placer County wine trail, and the trail continues through Newcastle, Penryn, Loomis and Auburn inside our radius. Couples also simply drive: south on Highway 65 to the restaurants around the Roseville Galleria, or up State Route 193 to Old Town Auburn for the evening. A restaurant delivery in any of those places wants a call from you first — we will make it work, but a bouquet that arrives while a table is empty is nobody's idea of a gift.
