About Lansing get-well

How Lansing sends get-well flowers.

Lansing is one of the smaller markets where the hospitals are genuinely in town, and the map is refreshingly short. Sparrow Hospital at 1215 East Michigan Avenue in 48912 — now UM Health-Sparrow following the University of Michigan Health merger — is the region's dominant medical center and its Level I trauma referral hospital, with the Sparrow Children's Center and the Herbert-Herman Cancer Center on the same East Michigan campus and the professional buildings around it. McLaren Greater Lansing opened its replacement hospital on Collins Road in south Lansing in 2022, moving off the old West Greenlawn Avenue site, and it carries the Karmanos Cancer Institute service line. Between them they absorb most of what happens to a resident of Ingham, Eaton and Clinton counties. Outside the city, still inside our widened radius: Sparrow Eaton in Charlotte, Sparrow Clinton in St. Johns, Sparrow Ionia to the west, and Eaton Rapids Medical Center to the south. The Lansing VA outpatient clinic is exactly that — outpatient, no inpatient beds — so an arrangement for someone seen there goes to the house. The serious referrals leave the region entirely: complex cases from mid-Michigan go to University of Michigan Health in Ann Arbor or to the Corewell Health hospitals in Grand Rapids, including Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. Ann Arbor sits at the edge of our 60-mile radius and Grand Rapids sits outside it, so a patient transferred west is not a same-day Lansing order any more — say so on the order and we will route it correctly instead of failing at a front desk.

The part that decides whether the flowers ever reach the room: hospitals say no more often than senders expect, and hearing it here is better than hearing it at a nurses' station. Intensive care units very commonly bar fresh flowers and live plants outright. Pollen, standing water and potting soil are infection-control problems in a unit full of central lines and open surgical sites, and critical care floors in this region are no different from critical care floors anywhere else — assume the restriction and call the unit rather than the reverse. Oncology, transplant and bone-marrow services are stricter still — a neutropenic patient at the Herbert-Herman Cancer Center or through the Karmanos service line may be on a floor where nothing living comes in at all. Neonatal intensive care allows no bedside flowers, full stop, and that catches a lot of would-be new-baby senders off guard. Some units allow mylar balloons but ban latex outright because of allergy risk; some ban balloons entirely. Where flowers are permitted, a shared room makes scent the deciding variable, and a heavily perfumed arrangement two feet from a stranger who is nauseated is an imposition rather than a gift. Call the unit before you order. One two-minute call to the nurses' station settles everything, and if the answer is no, the alternatives are genuinely good: send it to the family's house in Holt or on the eastside where the spouse is doing laundry at eleven at night, send it to the waiting family instead of the patient, or send something that goes home at discharge and keeps going.

Delivery details to prepare

Delivery destinations in Lansing.

Sparrow Hospital, 1215 East Michigan Avenue, and the Sparrow Children's Center

The region's dominant medical center and Level I trauma referral hospital, now UM Health-Sparrow after the University of Michigan Health merger — Hyacinth House Flowers on South Pennsylvania runs straight north to it; pediatric floors at the Children's Center want bright, compact, scent-free builds, no lilies, and a parent's mobile number because children change rooms

Herbert-Herman Cancer Center + the neutropenic and transplant restriction lane

On the same East Michigan campus as Sparrow, and among the strictest floors in the region on fresh flowers and live plants — a neutropenic patient may be on a unit where nothing living is admitted at all; call the floor before ordering and expect a plant, a home delivery or a waiting-family handoff to be the workable answer

McLaren Greater Lansing on Collins Road + the Karmanos Cancer Institute service line

The replacement hospital that opened on Collins Road in 2022, off the old West Greenlawn Avenue site — send to Collins Road, not an address from an old note; Belen's Flowers on East Jolly Road is on the same south-side grid, minutes away, and the Karmanos oncology floors carry the same fresh-flower restrictions as any cancer service

ICU, NICU and shared-room rules across both Lansing hospitals

Intensive care very commonly bars fresh flowers and live plants outright because of pollen, standing water and soil; neonatal intensive care allows no bedside flowers at all; some units ban latex balloons or balloons entirely; in shared rooms scent is the deciding variable and a perfumed arrangement two feet from a nauseated stranger is an imposition — one call to the nurses' station settles all of it

Rehab, skilled nursing and home recovery from Cedar Street to DeWitt

Rehabilitation and skilled-nursing addresses along Cedar Street, in Holt and through Okemos, plus home recovery across 48910, 48911, 48912, 48906, 48915 and 48917 and out to Holt, Okemos, Haslett, East Lansing, DeWitt, Grand Ledge and Mason — phone number required, because a vase on an unattended Lansing porch between late November and early April freezes solid

FAQ

Lansing flower delivery FAQs.

Which Lansing hospitals do you deliver get-well flowers to?

The two that handle nearly every admission in this region. Sparrow Hospital at 1215 East Michigan Avenue in 48912, now UM Health-Sparrow after the University of Michigan Health merger, including the Sparrow Children's Center and the Herbert-Herman Cancer Center on the same campus. And McLaren Greater Lansing on Collins Road in south Lansing, which opened its replacement hospital there in 2022 and carries the Karmanos Cancer Institute service line. Outside the city but inside our radius we also deliver to Sparrow Eaton in Charlotte, Sparrow Clinton in St. Johns, Sparrow Ionia and Eaton Rapids Medical Center. The Lansing VA clinic is outpatient only, with no inpatient beds, so those arrangements go to the house.

Can you deliver same-day to Sparrow Hospital?

Same-day options depend on the delivery ZIP, requested date, florist availability and that florist's local cutoff. Check the available options before paying; a city listing does not guarantee delivery today.

Can you deliver to McLaren Greater Lansing on Collins Road?

Yes, and geography is on your side. Belen's Flowers at 1434 East Jolly Road is on the same south-side grid as Collins Road, so McLaren's campus is a short run rather than a cross-town trip. McLaren moved into this replacement hospital in 2022 from the old West Greenlawn Avenue site, so make sure you are sending to Collins Road and not to an address from an old note. Name the unit, not just the hospital. If the patient is on a Karmanos Cancer Institute service line, call the floor first: oncology units restrict fresh flowers and live plants more often than general medical floors do.

What if the floor does not allow flowers?

It happens often enough that we plan for it. Intensive care very commonly bars fresh flowers and live plants because of pollen, standing water and soil. Oncology, transplant and bone-marrow services are stricter, and a neutropenic patient may be on a floor where nothing living is admitted at all. Neonatal intensive care allows no bedside flowers. Some units ban latex balloons or balloons entirely. The alternatives are genuinely good: deliver to the family's house, where the spouse or parent doing all the driving is the person who actually needs a lift; deliver to a waiting-room contact; or send a plant or dish garden that goes home at discharge and keeps going for months.

Which flowers are safe for a hospital room?

Our benches default to low-pollen, low-scent builds: gerbera, alstroemeria, carnation, lisianthus, stock, hydrangea, chrysanthemum and clean-centered roses. Lilies are the standard exclusion, because oriental and stargazer varieties shed heavy pollen, carry a scent that fills a room through a closed door, and are toxic to cats once the arrangement goes home. We build compact rather than tall, since a tray table and a windowsill are the only surfaces on offer, and always in a vase rather than a wrap, because nobody on a ward will hunt for a container and cut stems. Say the room is shared and the designer cuts the scent and the height without being asked twice.

What do you need from me for a hospital delivery?

The hospital and campus, the patient's full name as admitted, and the unit or room. Add a family member's mobile number, because patients get moved between floors and a phone number is what turns a failed delivery into a successful one. Tell us if the room is shared so the designer keeps the scent and footprint down, and tell us if discharge is expected within a day or two, in which case sending to the house is the better order. If you are not sure whether flowers are allowed on the floor, say so and we will steer you toward a plant or a home delivery rather than risking a bouquet being refused at a desk.

Someone just had a baby at Sparrow. Is it the same thing?

Nearly, with two differences. First, if the baby is in neonatal intensive care, no bedside flowers are permitted, so the send goes to the mother's room only if she is on a regular postpartum floor, or to the house. Second, keep it compact and scent-light: a postpartum room is already crowded with a bassinet, a visitor chair and a go-bag, and the family will carry everything to a car within a day or two, so a sturdy vase beats a delicate one. Many senders do better aiming at the house for the week after discharge, when the visitors have stopped coming and the nights get long.

Can you deliver to a rehab, skilled nursing or senior-living address?

Yes, and those are steady runs for Belen's Flowers along Cedar Street and the south-side corridors and for Williamston Florist through Okemos and Haslett. Deliveries go through a front desk, so we need the resident's full name plus the room, unit or wing. Keep the footprint small, because a shared nightstand holds a lamp, a water cup and a phone before it holds a vase, and some units restrict glass. A plant is usually the better choice than cut flowers for a long rehabilitation stay, both because it lasts the length of the admission and because it travels home afterwards without needing anything from staff.

Can you deliver to someone recovering at home in Lansing?

Yes, and it is frequently the better order. Home recovery routes cover 48910 and 48911 in south Lansing, 48912 on the eastside, 48906 in Old Town and the north side, 48915 on the westside and 48917 in Waverly and Delta Township, plus Holt, Okemos, Haslett, East Lansing, DeWitt, Grand Ledge, Williamston, Mason and Charlotte. Give us a phone number so the driver hands the arrangement over at the door. From late November into early April a vase left on an unattended porch here freezes solid, and someone recovering from surgery should not be walking out to a cold step to collect flowers either.
