Anniversaries are the occasion where Kearny's particular character shows most clearly, because this is a town people do not leave. The same two-family houses that Scottish and Irish mill families bought in the 1880s were sold to Italian and Irish households after the war, and then to Portuguese, Brazilian, Ecuadorian and Peruvian families from the 1970s onward — and in a great many of them, the couple who married at the parish eight blocks away is still upstairs. That produces a specific order pattern we see almost nowhere else on this grid: milestone anniversaries, thirty and forty and fifty and sixty years, delivered to an address a fifteen-minute walk from the church where the vows were said. Highland Avenue, Quincy Avenue, Halstead Street, Chestnut Street, Belgrove Drive, and the Arlington blocks at the north end. Adult children order these from three states away. Give us the floor and a phone number and the rest is easy.
Kearny has no hotel, which shapes every anniversary getaway that starts here. The nearest rooms are across the Passaic in Harrison, where Element Harrison-Newark and the Hampton Inn & Suites Newark-Harrison sit beside Red Bull Arena and the PATH station — one stop from Newark Penn, a short ride from lower Manhattan, which is why couples from Kearny use them as a base rather than a destination. Four or five miles east across the Hackensack is the Meadowlands Parkway hotel cluster in Secaucus: Embassy Suites by Hilton Secaucus-Meadowlands, Hyatt Place Secaucus/Meadowlands, Courtyard Secaucus Meadowlands. On the Hudson, Hyatt Regency Jersey City on the Hudson at Exchange Place and The Westin Jersey City Newport put the Manhattan skyline in the window, with Canopy by Hilton Jersey City Arts District and Hyatt House Jersey City nearby and W Hoboken a little further up the river. In Newark itself: the Robert Treat Hotel on Broad Street and Hotel Indigo Newark Downtown, plus the Newark Liberty International Airport Marriott and Hilton Newark Airport for couples flying out in the morning.
Dinner is the other half of an anniversary order, and around Kearny that means the Ironbound. Ferry Street in Newark is ten minutes south over the Passaic and it is where this whole corridor has marked occasions for fifty years: Fornos of Spain, Iberia, Casa Vasca on Elm Street, Seabra's Marisqueira, the Spanish Tavern on McWhorter Street. Kearny Avenue has its own Portuguese and Brazilian rodízio houses and bakeries for a shorter night out, and Jersey City's downtown restaurant blocks and Hoboken's Washington Street are both twenty minutes away. If you want flowers waiting on the table, call the restaurant before you order: many will accept a small vase arrangement delivered in the late afternoon and set it aside, some will not accept anything at all, and none of them want a tall design on a two-top. A compact, low, water-held piece is the only shape that works. For anniversary parties rather than dinners, the banquet houses in range include Nanina's in the Park in Belleville, The Manor and Highlawn Pavilion on the West Orange ridge, The Graycliff in Moonachie and The Venetian in Garfield — those take deliveries to a named function room and a stated start time.
