The St. Johns is one of the few major rivers in the United States that flows north, and in Jacksonville it does something more useful for an anniversary: it bends through the middle of the city, so the good tables and the good views are spread along both banks instead of stacked in one district. That shapes how anniversary flowers move here. A downtown evening means the Northbank — the Hyatt Regency on East Coastline Drive, the Omni on Water Street, the Riverwalk, and Cowford Chophouse in the old bank building at Bay and Ocean — or the Southbank, where the DoubleTree sits on Riverplace Boulevard beside the Riverwalk, Friendship Fountain and the museum. A San Marco evening means the Square, where Matthew's on Hendricks Avenue, Bistro Aix and Taverna sit within a few blocks of each other. A Riverside and Avondale evening means Restaurant Orsay on St. Johns Avenue, the rooftops at River & Post and Black Sheep in Five Points, and the historic gardens at the Cummer Museum on Riverside Avenue. Out on the water it means Clark's Fish Camp on Julington Creek in Mandarin, Marker 32 on the Intracoastal off Beach Boulevard, Palm Valley Fish Camp in Ponte Vedra, or Ocean 60 in Atlantic Beach. None of those are more than about twenty minutes from a bench on this grid — but several are on the opposite bank from it, and the river has only a handful of crossings.
Hotel delivery is the most requested anniversary route in Jacksonville, and it has one rule that decides whether it works: aim for the front desk before check-in, not for the room after it. Housekeeping will place an arrangement in a room that is already made up; a bell stand will not chase a guest who has gone to dinner. Downtown that means the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront on East Coastline Drive and the Omni Jacksonville on Water Street; on the Southbank the DoubleTree by Hilton Jacksonville Riverfront on Riverplace Boulevard; at Southpoint the Jacksonville Marriott off Salisbury Road, with the Baymeadows and Town Center cluster of Hyatt Place, Residence Inn, Embassy Suites and Hilton Garden Inn properties around Butler Boulevard. At the coast, the historic Casa Marina on First Street and the Margaritaville Beach Hotel in Jacksonville Beach, One Ocean Resort in Atlantic Beach, and across the county line the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club on Ponte Vedra Boulevard, The Lodge and Club, and the Sawgrass Marriott on PGA Tour Boulevard beside TPC Sawgrass. Two Jacksonville weeks will beat you if you ignore them: Players Championship week in March, when Ponte Vedra and the Southside fill and Butler Boulevard crawls, and the Florida–Georgia weekend in the fall, when downtown hotels sell out and the stadium district is closed off. On both, order a day early and ask the studio for a morning window.
Restaurant-table delivery deserves a straight answer rather than a promise. Most Jacksonville restaurants will accept an arrangement at the host stand in the afternoon and set it on your table before service — that is the version that reliably works, and it is what our studios will do if you give them the restaurant, the reservation name and the time. What does not reliably work is a florist arriving mid-service with flowers for table nine: kitchens are busy, the host stand is slammed, and the delivery driver's window is not the restaurant's window. So call the restaurant yourself, ask whether they will hold an arrangement from the afternoon, then put the answer in the order notes. Better still for many couples: send the flowers to the house that morning so they are part of the whole day rather than a prop at the end of it, and keep the restaurant for the dinner. If the anniversary is a milestone with a party attached, Jacksonville's private-event geography runs to the Epping Forest Yacht Club in San Marco — the 1920s Alfred I. duPont estate on the river — the Cummer Museum's riverfront gardens in Riverside, the Timuquana and San Jose country clubs, Deercreek and Marsh Landing out toward the Intracoastal, and the Beaches Town Center venues on the Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach line. Those are all inside the ring; Amelia Island and St. Augustine are not.
