Independence exists because of an argument. When Grayson County needed a permanent seat in 1850, the factions could not agree, so three commissioners from neighboring counties climbed Point Lookout Mountain, looked down at a green bowl where five streams came together, and planted the courthouse there — a compromise the winning "independents" gave their name to. That origin still shapes the town: a compact square built around the 1908 courthouse (now the county arts center and Crossroads museum), Main Street and US-21 running through, and the mountains of the Mount Rogers highlands rising on every side.
