Delivery destinations in The Heights.

Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital, 1635 North Loop West

The neighborhood's own hospital and the only one in 77008 — emergency room, general medical and surgical floors, roughly a mile up Ella Boulevard from Atha's Florist at 2210 Ella. The shortest hospital run on this page and the only one that never touches a freeway. Confirm it is this Memorial Hermann and not the Fannin Street one before ordering.

MD Anderson Cancer Center, 1515 Holcombe Blvd

Around the corner from the Fannin blocks, and the strictest destination in range. The stem-cell transplant floors take neither cut flowers nor potted plants, and intensive care follows suit; a general oncology room is usually a yes. Name the unit so the shop can call ahead instead of sending a van that gets turned around downstairs.

Baylor St. Luke's on Bertner, Ben Taub on Ben Taub Loop, the DeBakey VA on Holcombe

Cardiac and transplant work at 6720 Bertner, where the Texas Heart Institute sits, restricts perfume rather than flowers. Ben Taub is Harris Health's trauma hospital — wait for a room number before sending. The VA at 2002 Holcombe runs long medical stays where a plant beats a bouquet. Aclassic Bloom at 6560 Fannin Ste 230 covers all three, unrated so far.

TIRR Memorial Hermann, 1333 Moursund Street

The long-stay rehabilitation hospital on the southern edge of the district, where recovery is measured in weeks and the room becomes a temporary apartment. Flowers are welcome here in a way acute wards do not allow, and a potted plant outlasts three deliveries. Include the room number — nothing gets paged in a rehab wing. Morning drops beat the afternoon therapy block.

Discharge day across 77008 and the bungalow blocks

The destination for more of these orders than every hospital on the list combined, because Houston does so much of its surgery as day cases and the patient is home on Harvard or Rutland before dinner. No unit rules apply. The obstacles are physical: a pier-and-beam porch five steps up, an unlabelled side gate, and numbered streets that split east and west near Studewood. Text on approach and name the prefix.

FAQ

The Heights flower delivery FAQs.

They said Memorial Hermann. Is that the Medical Center or the one on the Loop?

Ask, because the two are six miles apart and the name is on both. Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital is at 1635 North Loop West, on the 610 feeder inside 77008 — the neighborhood's own community hospital, emergency room plus general medical and surgical floors, and the likeliest first stop for anyone with a Heights address. Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center is at 6411 Fannin, south of downtown, and takes the trauma and the specialist work. Atha's Florist on Ella Blvd is about a mile from the first; Houstonmedicalcenter Florist on Fannin is minutes from the second. Getting the building right changes which shop drives.

Can flowers go to a patient at MD Anderson?

Often yes, but not to every floor, and the exceptions are the ones people most want to send to. The stem-cell transplant units at 1515 Holcombe do not accept cut flowers or potted plants, and intensive care generally does not either — the concern is the standing water and the soil sitting an arm's length from someone with no immune margin, more than the blooms. A general oncology room is usually a different answer. Tell us the unit when you order and the studio calls that floor before anything is built. If the answer is no, the practical substitute is a compliant arrangement waiting at the house, or one sent to the family member who is doing the driving.

Our grandchild is in the NICU at the Pavilion for Women. What can we send?

Not flowers into the unit. The newborn intensive care floors at Texas Children's Pavilion for Women, 6651 Main, keep the bedside clear, and an arrangement left at the desk there is a problem for a nurse rather than a gift. Send it to the mother's postpartum room in the same building instead — she is the one who will actually look at it during a stay measured in weeks — or to the family's own address in the Heights, where it greets them after the drive back up Main. Keep it low and unscented either way; postpartum rooms are shared more often than people expect.

Why do your hospital builds skip lilies and anything perfumed?

Two separate nuisances, and neither of them is about taste. Lily anthers release a rust-colored powder that stains linen, gowns and fingers, and the cleanup lands on whoever is working that shift. The heavily perfumed flowers — oriental lilies again, hyacinth, tuberose, paperwhites — are bred to carry across a room, and a room where anti-nausea medication is being adjusted by the hour is the worst audience they could have. In a shared room the smell reaches a second patient who was never asked. So the standard build here comes out pollen-free, unperfumed and low. Lilies are a fine idea for the bungalow on the day they come home, when the smell is the whole point of them.

A relative is at TIRR for a long rehabilitation stay. Does that change things?

It changes the format. TIRR Memorial Hermann at 1333 Moursund Street is a rehabilitation hospital, so the stay is counted in weeks, and the room stops being somewhere a patient passes through and starts being where they live. Long-stay floors want flowers in a way an acute ward cannot afford to, and a potted plant earns its price here — it is still going strong when a third bouquet would already have hit the bin. Write the room number into the order: there is no paging desk chasing patients around a rehab wing, and a driver carrying only a surname circles the building. Therapy fills the middle of the day, so a morning drop finds the room occupied.

Someone was taken to Ben Taub after a wreck on the North Freeway. When should I send?

Wait until they have a floor and a room number. Ben Taub on Ben Taub Loop is Harris Health's trauma center, and a patient still in the emergency department or in surgery has no fixed location for a delivery to land — the arrangement sits downstairs and the family, who are not in a receiving mood anyway, get called about it. Once they are admitted to a unit it is a straightforward drop. The same holds for the Red Duke Trauma Institute at Memorial Hermann-TMC, 6411 Fannin. In the first day or two, the more useful delivery is to the relative's kitchen table back in the Heights.

The recovery is happening at the bungalow, not in a hospital. What changes?

The front steps, mostly. These bungalows sit raised on piers, so the porch is four to six steps up and someone eight days past an operation is not coming down them for a doorbell. Leave a cell number, ask for a text on approach, and say whether to hand it over or set it inside the screen door. Address it fully: W 11th and E 11th are different streets, split near Studewood, and a missing prefix sends a driver a mile and a half wrong. Ward rules stop at the curb, so send the scented, generous, lily-heavy thing they actually like — though the old dry-district lines still limit what can be sold alongside it here, which is why we pair with food rather than bottles.
