Flowers for Hinton, WV

Few American towns wear their history as plainly as Hinton. The whole downtown is a National Register district — block after block of brick from the C&O Railway's boom years, laid out on a narrow bench where the New, the Greenbrier, and the Bluestone rivers braid together below Bluestone Dam. That geography is the delivery story. Temple Street and the streets stacked up the hillside above it are minutes apart on foot but a genuine climb by van; the flat river addresses in Bellepoint and along Second Avenue move fast; and everything beyond the valley — Sandstone toward the falls, the two-lanes bending out to Pipestem Resort State Park — rides an afternoon loop that a local driver already knows by feel. Get-well work goes to Summers County ARH and, when a family member lands in Beckley, up Route 20 to the Raleigh County hospitals.
