Most flowers sold in this country are tied to a date on a calendar. The just-because order is the opposite, and Henderson is a good city for it, because it is a city of people who arrived from somewhere else and left their whole support network behind when they did. Somebody's mother retired to Sun City Anthem in 2011 and her children are in Illinois. Somebody's neighbour in Inspirada watched the dog for a week and will not accept money. Somebody has worked a swing shift at a plant on the BMI complex for eleven years and nobody has ever sent them anything. Those are the orders on this page, and they land best on a Tuesday or a Wednesday, when the benches are calm, the drivers are not queueing behind a holiday and a delivery arrives as a genuine surprise rather than as the expected consequence of a date. Henderson's everyday map is easy to route once you know it. The Water Street District downtown is the original city — city hall at 240 Water Street, the convention centre, the storefronts and the street market, and the Townsite blocks behind it, which are the only part of Henderson where houses have real front porches, built in the 1940s for the workers at the wartime magnesium plant that created the place. West and south of that, everything is master-planned: Green Valley from the 1980s, Seven Hills and MacDonald Highlands climbing above the valley floor, Anthem and Sun City Anthem on the Black Mountain bench, Inspirada and Cadence still filling in with young families, Lake Las Vegas out at the eastern end.
Five patterns account for most of the just-because volume in this city, and each has a wrinkle worth knowing. The parent on the bench. Sun City Anthem and Solera are age-restricted communities full of people whose families are two time zones away, and a bouquet arriving on a Wednesday for no reason is the whole point. Both have visitor procedures at the gate, so the recipient's phone number goes on the order, and a keepable vessel — a ceramic or a glass cube rather than a wrapped sleeve — suits a household that does not want daily upkeep. The thank-you. Front offices at Green Valley, Coronado, Foothill, Liberty and Basic Academy of International Studies take teacher and staff deliveries, as do the elementary and middle schools threaded through Green Valley and Anthem; flowers go to the office, never to a classroom, and a school will not interrupt a lesson, so send early in the day rather than at dismissal. The neighbour. In a city of HOAs and identical streetscapes, house numbers matter more than street names — get the number right and note the colour of the door if you know it. The new arrival. Cadence and Inspirada are still under construction in places, and a brand-new address sometimes has not reached every map yet, so add a cross street. The shift worker. The resorts, the hospitals at Union Village and St. Rose Parkway, and the plants along Lake Mead Parkway all run rotations, so ask before you guess at an evening window.
