Harrison's working birthdays happen on corporate campuses, and a campus is not an office tower. PepsiCo's world headquarters occupies a large landscaped property at 700 Anderson Hill Road in Purchase, with the Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Gardens set among the buildings. Mastercard's global headquarters is at 2000 Purchase Street. MBIA is on Manhattanville Road. Along the Westchester Avenue corridor that parallels I-287 through Purchase and West Harrison sits a long run of low office buildings that between them hold a sizable share of the county's white-collar employment, and Westchester County Airport, partly inside this town's boundaries on the northwest edge, handles the corporate aviation that comes with them. What all of that means for a birthday bouquet is practical: there is rarely a street-facing lobby with a doorman, there is usually a gatehouse or a visitor entrance well back from the road, deliveries are received at a mailroom or a loading dock rather than at the recipient's desk, and the people who receive them route by department and full name. So put the employer, the building or suite number, the department, and the recipient's mobile on the order. Add one more consideration that did not exist a decade ago — hybrid schedules mean an office birthday bouquet sent on a Monday or a Friday has a real chance of sitting in a mailroom over a weekend. Tuesday through Thursday is the safe window.
The residential half of the town splits into three delivery problems. Around the station, 10528 is dense and walkable: front stoops, two- and three-family houses, apartments over the shops, permit parking on the commercial blocks. It is the easiest birthday delivery in the radius and the one place a driver can double-park for ninety seconds without an incident. Purchase is the opposite. Large-lot zoning means long driveways, entrance gates, houses invisible from the road, and mailbox numbers that are either at the bottom of the drive or nowhere; the country clubs up there — Century, Old Oaks and Brae Burn — sit on roads where every entrance looks like every other entrance. If the birthday address is in 10577, the gate code or a phone number is not a nicety, it is the delivery. West Harrison, across the Hutch and reached by the Lake Street side, behaves like a small separate village with its own main street and the Silver Lake Preserve behind it; drivers who know Harrison do not automatically know the West Harrison street grid, so the ZIP and the cross street help. Everywhere in this town, weather decides whether a porch drop is acceptable. From roughly December through March nothing cut survives an unattended hour on a Westchester step, and a February birthday is better handed to a person.
