Flowers for Hamburg, MI

Alpine Florist And Gifts fields the call the same way every summer: a bouquet for a porch on Strawberry Lake, delivered by a driver who already knows the cottage by its sign rather than its street number. That, in one order, is Hamburg. The Huron River strings a chain of lakes through the township — Strawberry, Zukey, Base Line, Gallagher, Portage — and the map lives as much in association drives and dock names as in house numbers. The village itself is small and legible, gathered where the rail bed and the Lakeland Trail cross M-36 beside the general store and the township hall, before the addresses fan out down Merrill, Hamburg Road, and Winans Lake Road to places that were summer cabins a generation back and are lived-in homes now.
