Almost all of Fullerton's romance volume lands inside a very small footprint. Four blocks of Harbor Boulevard between Commonwealth Avenue and Chapman Avenue hold the bars, the restaurants and the sidewalk that draw people in from Brea, Placentia, La Habra and Buena Park on a Friday, and the anchor is the Fox Fullerton Theatre at 500 North Harbor, a 1925 house whose marquee has been the corner's landmark for a century. A block south, the Villa del Sol courtyard at 305 North Harbor is the prettiest twenty feet in the city after dark. Around them: Angelo's & Vinci's at 550 North Harbor with its cathedral-junkyard interior, Heroes on West Santa Fe, Mulberry St Ristorante on West Wilshire, Bootlegger's Brewery on South Highland. The practical consequence for flowers is that a Fullerton date usually starts on foot, which means nobody wants to carry a tall arrangement for three hours. The orders that work here are hand-tied and wrapped, delivered to the recipient's door earlier in the day, or delivered to the restaurant before service and held at the host stand until the table is seated.
For the dates that leave town, Fullerton has a genuine advantage worth knowing: the Fullerton Transportation Center at 120 East Santa Fe Avenue puts Metrolink and the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner about forty minutes from Los Angeles Union Station, so a lot of couples here skip the 5 entirely on an evening out. Flowers for that kind of date have to be delivered at home beforehand, not carried onto a train. Closer in, the walking dates run along the Juanita Cooke Greenbelt on the old rail right-of-way, the Bud Turner Trail, Laguna Lake Park and the Fullerton Loop that stitches them together, or up the long WPA-era stair at Hillcrest Park on North Harbor. For overnight plans the city has exactly one full-service hotel, the Fullerton Marriott at Cal State Fullerton at 2701 East Nutwood Avenue, and the nearest alternatives are the Brea hotels up Imperial Highway and the Anaheim resort properties about seven miles south. A hotel delivery needs the guest name, the check-in date and a note that it is a surprise, so the front desk holds it rather than calling the room.
