The city is compact — under ten square miles — with 91731 covering the western and downtown side around Valley Boulevard and 91732 the larger eastern half; 91733 is the separate city of South El Monte; and 91734 and 91735 exist only as post-office boxes, so a bouquet cannot be sent to one. The Rio Hondo on the west and the San Gabriel River on the east cut the grid into strips, and a house that looks close on a map may need the bridge at Peck, Durfee, Santa Anita, Lower Azusa or Valley, which is worth ten minutes on a Friday afternoon. What works in your favour: apartment courts along Garvey and Valley, mobile-home parks where a space number is the address, rear units behind main houses, and a lot of multi-generational households where someone genuinely is home at two in the afternoon. Up in North El Monte above Lower Azusa the lots get large and a few still keep horses, so give the gate detail. And when the party is a weekend carne asada at Legg Lake in the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area, remember the park has no street address a driver can deliver to — send the flowers to the house that morning and let them travel with the ice chests.
