Flowers for El Dorado, KS

El Dorado was a sleepy county seat until October 1915, when the Stapleton No. 1 came in and the Walnut River valley turned into one of the biggest oil fields in the country almost overnight — the Kansas Oil Museum on North Main still keeps the derrick and the story. A century on, the boom-town bones remain in a wide brick downtown and a refinery that still hums on the north edge, but the flower business here runs on the everyday rhythms: Butler Community College Grizzly seasons, Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital on West Central, and the churches around the courthouse. Orders move from the center of town out to the college housing, over to the lake and its state-park cabins east of US-77, and down toward Augusta and Andover where the Wichita metro starts to press in. An El Dorado address can be a downtown storefront, a ranch off K-254, or a campsite on a reservoir shore — the notes field earns its keep here.
