Coon Valley is a village of a few hundred people folded into the Driftless — the unglaciated corner of southwest Wisconsin where the land drops into steep, wooded coulees instead of flattening out. Coon Creek runs the valley floor, U.S. 14/61 threads through on its way between La Crosse and Westby, and Central Avenue is about the whole of downtown. The Coon Creek watershed here was the country's first coordinated soil-conservation project back in the 1930s, and the farming heritage is still the whole personality of the place; three miles north, Norskedalen and the Skumsrud Heritage Farm keep the Norwegian settler history alive.
