Most Chico services are not held in a funeral chapel at all — they are held in a church, and the churches are spread across the town in a way the funeral homes are not. St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at 435 Chestnut Street and Our Divine Savior Catholic Church at 566 East Lassen Avenue carry the Catholic funeral Masses on opposite sides of the city. Bidwell Presbyterian Church at 208 West First Street is downtown, immediately beside the Chico State campus edge, and its services put traffic onto streets that were not built for it. Trinity United Methodist Church sits at 285 East Fifth Street in the same downtown blocks. Neighborhood Church of Chico at 2801 Notre Dame Boulevard is a large campus a few hundred yards up the same street as the florist's bench — geographically the shortest sympathy run in the entire market. Congregation Beth Israel on Hemlock Street serves Chico's Jewish community, where flowers at the service are not the convention and a plant sent to the family's home afterward usually is. Ring the church office and ask where the piece goes: a chancel has different room than a chapel, and some sanctuaries will not take a full standing easel at all.
Chico carries a grief that most towns of a hundred thousand do not, and it shapes sympathy work here. In November 2018 the Camp Fire destroyed Paradise, fifteen miles up the Skyway, killed eighty-five people and erased the Ridge's churches, chapels and cemeteries along with its houses. Thousands of survivors moved down into Chico and many never went back, which means a family living in the Avenues or on Bruce Road today may be burying someone whose entire community was in Paradise or Magalia. Services for Ridge families are now routinely held in Chico churches, with burial in Chico or down in Oroville. Then in July 2024 the Park Fire started at the edge of Upper Bidwell Park and ran north into Tehama County, and the town went through the smoke and the evacuation notices again. The practical upshot when you order from out of state: ask the family where the service is rather than assuming it is where they live, and expect the address to be a Chico church even when the obituary says Paradise.
