Cerritos was called Dairy Valley until 1967, and the street plan still reads like a city laid out all at once after the cows left: six straight arterials - Del Amo Boulevard, South Street, 183rd Street, Alondra Boulevard, Artesia Boulevard and 166th Street - crossed by Gridley Road, Bloomfield Avenue, Carmenita Road, Norwalk Boulevard, Studebaker Road and Shoemaker Avenue, with everything in between filled by curving tract loops and cul-de-sacs. For a birthday delivery that geometry is mostly a gift. Almost every address in 90703 is a single-family house with a driveway, a front walk and a shaded porch, which is the easiest drop a florist gets and the reason birthday volume here lands on doorsteps rather than in lobbies. The two things that actually cost time are the loops, where a missed entrance means going back out to the arterial and around, and the word Artesia. Artesia is a boulevard running across the south side of Cerritos, a separate city next door in 90701, and the name of the 91 freeway. Whitelotu's Florist at 13303 1/2 Artesia Boulevard is in Cerritos, in 90703, and an order that says Artesia in the city field instead of the street field sends a driver a mile and a half in the wrong direction. Write Cerritos and 90703 and it never happens.
Timing a Cerritos birthday comes down to two clocks. The first is the school bell. ABC Unified lets out in the early afternoon, and for roughly forty-five minutes the arterials beside the big campuses thicken - Shoemaker Avenue by Whitney High, 183rd Street by Cerritos High, Artesia Boulevard by Gahr - while the pick-up lines back out into the traffic lanes. The second is the sun. A porch that is pleasant at nine in the morning is a hot slab of concrete at three, and in September and October, when the inland heat runs late and the Santa Ana winds arrive, a vase left on an exposed step is a wilted vase by the time anybody gets home. Both clocks point the same way: ask for a morning window. Weekends have their own pinch, because South Street past Los Cerritos Center and Studebaker Road past the Auto Square carry shopping traffic all day and the 605 runs right along both. If the birthday falls on a Sunday or a holiday, place the order a day early and let the studio pick its own hour rather than promising yourself an afternoon slot the grid may not give back.
