Carlsbad is the second-largest city in North San Diego County and it does not have a hospital. Everything in town is outpatient — clinics, imaging, surgery centres along El Camino Real and off the Palomar Airport Road corridor — so the moment somebody from 92008, 92009, 92010 or 92011 is actually admitted, they leave the city, and which direction they leave in is the single most useful thing you can tell a florist. Tri-City Medical Center at 4002 Vista Way in Oceanside is the nearest acute-care campus, about six miles up the coast or up El Camino Real, sitting right at the Highway 78 interchange — which is also the reason a mid-afternoon delivery there is a gamble, because the 78 through Oceanside and Vista is the one North County road that thickens in both directions at shift change. Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas at 354 Santa Fe Drive is the southern option, reached down the I-5 and off at Santa Fe Drive or Encinitas Boulevard; it is a compact campus where the information desk is close to the entrance, which in practice means a named unit gets an arrangement upstairs quickly. Palomar Medical Center Escondido on Citracado Parkway is the inland trauma destination at the far end of the 78, twenty-odd miles away, and Kaiser Permanente's San Marcos medical center takes Kaiser members from this part of the county off the same corridor. Say the campus name and the unit. Tri-City, Encinitas and Escondido are three different afternoons for the same driver.
Past those four, Carlsbad patients get referred down the coast, and the distances change what a shop can promise. Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego on Children's Way is where seriously ill children from North County end up — roughly thirty-five miles down the I-5 and the 163, far enough that any shop on this ring will quote a longer window and may push the delivery to the following morning. Specialist and cancer care pulls toward La Jolla: Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla on Genesee Avenue, and UC San Diego Health's Jacobs Medical Center and Moores Cancer Center on the university's east campus, all twenty-five to thirty miles from the Carlsbad centroid. And there is a destination that is genuinely particular to this stretch of coast: Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, on the base immediately north of Oceanside. No commercial florist holds base access, so a delivery there is not a delivery — the workable answer is the family's own address off base, or a hand-off at the visitor center with somebody meeting the driver. That matters more in Carlsbad than it would elsewhere, because a large share of households here are serving or retired Marine Corps and Navy families. Meanwhile a lot of what people call a get-well order in this city never goes near a hospital at all: it goes to La Costa Glen in 92009, to Carlsbad By The Sea on the boulevard in the Village, to Rancho Carlsbad off El Camino Real, or to somebody recovering at home in Calavera Hills after a procedure that took a single morning.
