About Boston get-well

How Boston sends get-well flowers.

What gets through the door is settled on the ward, and in Longwood the strictest wards are exactly the ones families reading this are most likely visiting. The adult cancer service Dana-Farber runs inside Brigham and Women's, and the stem-cell transplant beds there, take neither cut stems nor anything growing in a pot — and the part people guess wrong is that the objection is aimed at water before pollen. A vase is a warm reservoir parked an arm's length from someone with no white count to spare, and soil is worse, because what is being kept out is a fungal spore rather than a smell. The cancer and transplant beds at Boston Children's hold the same line, and Children's turns away latex balloons across the hospital on allergy grounds; mylar is generally fine. The burn unit at Shriners Children's on Blossom Street keeps flowers out of patient rooms entirely, so the request to make there is a drop at the family lounge with the child's name on the card. Intensive care refuses as policy rather than preference — the Blake, Ellison and Lunder units at Mass General, the cardiac and newborn floors at the Brigham, the medical ICUs at Tufts and at Boston Medical Center — and no desk downstairs can overturn that. Everywhere else the limits are smaller. Fragrance is what quietly relocates an arrangement into a corridor: stargazers, freesia, hyacinth and heavy stock are bred to fill a room, and in a shared room in the Menino Pavilion or on an older Tufts floor that choice lands on a stranger whose nausea is being managed by the hour. Lilies also drop a rust-colored anther dust over linen that somebody on shift then has to clean. Footprint decides the rest: a windowsill in one of the older Fruit Street buildings is about the width of a hardback, so a dense low vessel stays where you meant it and a tall one is moved within the hour.

Delivery details to prepare

Delivery destinations in Boston.

Longwood: Brigham, Beth Israel Deaconess, Boston Children's, Dana-Farber

The busiest destination here and the easiest to misaddress. Beds are at 75 Francis Street, 330 Brookline Avenue and 300 Longwood Avenue; 450 Brookline Avenue and One Joslin Place hold clinics only. The cancer and transplant beds inside the Brigham and at Children's take nothing cut and nothing potted. Boston Flowers on Commonwealth Avenue is nearest.

West End and the Navy Yard: Mass General, Mass Eye and Ear, Shriners, Spaulding

55 Fruit Street, 243 Charles Street and 51 Blossom Street stand almost shoulder to shoulder, with Spaulding at 300 First Avenue over the water in Charlestown. Three answers: a full legal name for Mass General's lobby, the house for Mass Eye and Ear day surgery, the family lounge at Shriners. Mystic Florist runs the side.

Chinatown and the South End: Tufts Medical Center, Boston Medical Center

Tufts at 800 Washington Street lost its inpatient pediatric service in 2022, so children go to Longwood now. BMC's Menino Pavilion opens onto Harrison Avenue and carries the city's Level 1 trauma load, with shared rooms where a scent becomes a stranger's problem. Olympia Flower at 1745 Washington Street is half a mile off.

Centre Street and the southwest: Faulkner, Hebrew Rehabilitation, the VA

Brigham and Women's Faulkner at 1153 Centre Street and Hebrew Rehabilitation Center at 1200 Centre Street face each other across the Jamaica Plain–Roslindale line, with the VA's West Roxbury campus on VFW Parkway nearby. VA gates run their own ID and screening rules, so allow time. Exotic Flowers on American Legion Highway is the local shop.

North of the Mystic: MelroseWakefield, Winchester, Lahey, Mount Auburn, Everett

MelroseWakefield at 585 Lebanon Street is up the road from Martin's Florist Andgreen House at number 119 in Malden, with Affairstoremember Florist on Main Street in Melrose close by. The Flower Shoppe Oferics in Reading takes Lahey and Winchester; Capelo's in Medford takes Mount Auburn; Muzzydaysquare Florist in East Boston, Wpfandstb in Chelsea and Flowers Bylily in Revere cover Everett and the Crest Avenue veterans' home.

Families lodged near Longwood for a long treatment

Boston pulls patients in from four states and from Canada, so many recipients here are not residents — parents at the Ronald McDonald House in Brookline, adults at the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge on South Huntington Avenue, relatives in hotels along Longwood Avenue. No ward rules apply; a room and cell number is all a desk needs.

Discharge day at a Boston address

Where most of this page's flowers should probably go, given how much surgery here is now a one-night stay. Triple-deckers and walk-ups mean stairs, shared vestibules and unlabeled buzzers, and permit parking rules out waiting at the curb. Name the floor, leave a cell number, ask for a text ahead.

FAQ

Boston flower delivery FAQs.

The family said Dana-Farber. Where do I actually send it?

To Brigham and Women's at 75 Francis Street, if the patient is an adult. Dana-Farber keeps no adult inpatient beds — 450 Brookline Avenue is clinics and infusion chairs — so an adult admitted under a Dana-Farber team is in a Brigham tower a few hundred yards away, and a child is at Boston Children's on Longwood Avenue. For either of those beds the honest answer is usually that nothing living gets in. Ask whoever is at the bedside whether the house, or wherever the family is lodging near Longwood, would land better.

Mass General, Mass Eye and Ear, Shriners — what is different on the West End side?

Three buildings inside a few hundred yards and three different answers. Mass General at 55 Fruit Street wants the patient's full legal name as admitting recorded it, plus a building and floor if the family has them, because the campus is vast and its lobby is where an under-addressed delivery stalls. Mass Eye and Ear at 243 Charles Street is largely day surgery, so your recipient is likely home by evening and the house is the better address. Shriners Children's at 51 Blossom Street keeps flowers out of burn-unit rooms; ask for the family lounge. Mystic Florist covers all three.

My relative named a hospital I cannot find. What happened to it?

Most likely one of the recent closures. Carney Hospital on Dorchester Avenue admitted its last patients in August 2024 when Steward Health Care collapsed, and St. Elizabeth's on Cambridge Street in Brighton passed to Boston Medical Center that autumn. Quincy Medical Center has been gone for years, which is why people from Quincy now turn up at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth or at BMC in the South End. Waltham has no hospital either, despite hosting the most-reviewed shop on this page. Confirm the building with someone at the bedside before ordering — the difference can be fifteen miles of traffic.

Someone is in for weeks — Spaulding, Hebrew Rehabilitation, Franciscan Children's.

This is the part of the map where flowers are genuinely wanted, and where something living beats cut stems. Spaulding at 300 First Avenue in the Charlestown Navy Yard, Hebrew Rehabilitation Center at 1200 Centre Street in Roslindale and Franciscan Children's at 30 Warren Street in Brighton all run stays counted in weeks, and the room becomes somebody's address for the duration. A potted plant is still alive when the third bouquet would have gone in the bin. Put the unit and room number on the order — nobody gets paged in a rehabilitation wing.

They are having a joint replacement at New England Baptist. Worth sending anything?

Send it to the house instead. The Baptist, up on Parker Hill Avenue in Mission Hill, is almost entirely scheduled orthopedic work — hips, knees, spines — and the stay afterward is often one night and sometimes none. Flowers ordered on the morning of surgery can easily land after the patient has gone home to six weeks with a walker, which is where they would have done more good anyway. Day surgery at Mass Eye and Ear works the same way. Ask for the second or third day at home, once the visitors thin out.

They are recovering at home in Boston instead. Anything different?

The staircase. An enormous share of this city's housing is triple-deckers in Dorchester, South Boston and Jamaica Plain and walk-ups on Beacon Hill and around the South End, almost none with an elevator and many opening onto a shared vestibule of unlabeled buzzers. Someone three days out of surgery is not coming down three flights to answer a bell. Give the floor and a cell number and have the driver text ahead. Resident-permit streets make a long idle impossible, so an unanswered door means the flowers leave again. Discharge morning is the best use of all this.
