Start with the shape of the place, because it decides everything else. Bogota is a Bergen County borough of roughly three quarters of a square mile on the east bank of the Hackensack River, looking straight across the water at Hackensack, with Teaneck wrapped around its north and east and Ridgefield Park closing it off to the south. Palisade Avenue is the commercial spine, Larch Avenue carries the municipal complex and the library at 375 Larch Avenue, River Road runs the waterfront edge, and Queen Anne Road and Fort Lee Road cut across on their way to the next town. The entire borough is one ZIP, 07603. What that means for a birthday order is refreshingly plain: there is no concierge to sign for anything, no freight elevator to book, no building management to notify. There is a front step, a storm door and somebody who either is or is not home at two in the afternoon. The one thing a Bogota address does ask of you is precision about the unit. A great many houses here are two-family, with a separate entrance and a second bell, and a bouquet left at the wrong door in a building with two kitchens is a bouquet somebody else finds first.
Now the part that actually goes wrong. Bogota publishes addresses that look like destinations and are not homes, and a birthday is exactly the order that walks into them. The borough's recreation page carries a Center address separately from a temporary location for committee meetings at Borough Hall, which means the first municipal address a search turns up is not automatically the one your recipient will be standing in. The borough directory also lists a senior meeting room above the library at 375 Larch Avenue — a program location, not a residence. Flowers sent to either can work beautifully for a birthday that is being marked at a gathering, on two conditions: somebody there knows they are coming, and the arrangement is light enough and small enough that the person can carry it home at the end of the evening without asking for help. A tall vase piece is the wrong gift for a room with folding chairs. And a published municipal address is not a promise that the room is occupied — schedules move, activities relocate, and the driver arrives at whatever hour the route reaches the street. If the birthday is private, use the person's own house and skip all of it.
Bogota has no office towers, so the corporate half of a birthday order almost always leaves the borough. Inside 07603 the working addresses are the storefronts and front counters along Palisade Avenue, where naming the business matters as much as the street number. Everything else is across a bridge or a border. Hackensack is the county seat directly across the river, and its Main Street courthouse district — the Bergen County Courthouse and the Justice Center, with the law offices packed around them — takes a steady volume of desk drops from people who live four minutes away in Bogota. Hackensack University Medical Center on Prospect Avenue is the largest employer in this part of the county and a workplace as often as it is a hospital. Northeast of the borough, the Glenpointe complex in Teaneck sits at the junction where Route 4 and Interstate 80 meet, and Fairleigh Dickinson University's Metropolitan Campus straddles the river on River Road in Teaneck, minutes from Bogota's northern line. And a meaningful share of the borough commutes into Manhattan, which is the one case where the New York benches on this grid stop being the long way round and become the short one.
