Flowers for Bennettsville, SC

Bennettsville wears its history on its streets. The Marlboro County Courthouse, the Female Academy, and rows of antebellum and Victorian homes make up a downtown historic district on the National Register, and the town leaned into that heritage long before preservation was fashionable. It grew rich on cotton and bright-leaf tobacco, and while the warehouses have quieted, the old money left behind wide porches and gardens that still want fresh flowers on the table. West of the courthouse the land opens onto Lake Wallace, a cypress-ringed reservoir that gives the town its recreation and a good many of its wedding and anniversary backdrops. This is the upper Pee Dee, close enough to the North Carolina line that a Bennettsville order sometimes rides north toward McColl and the state border.
