Bellmawr has no hotel, and for an anniversary that absence is the most useful fact on the page. There is no concierge desk here to accept a delivery on a couple's behalf, no valet, no suite to have flowers waiting in. What the borough has instead is about 11,500 people in one ZIP code, 08031, living in roughly three square miles of small houses that mostly stay in families. Bellmawr Park is the clearest example — a community the federal government laid out in the late 1930s, near-identical houses on short blocks, and a place where the same surname can sit on the same block across three generations. A great many of the anniversary orders that come into this ZIP are therefore being placed by somebody who no longer lives here: an adult child in North Carolina or Texas sending to the house they grew up in, for a fortieth or a fiftieth, to parents who have been at that address longer than the sender has been alive. That changes the brief. You are not dressing a hotel room for one night. You are putting something on a kitchen table in a small house, where it will be looked at every day for a week and where a tall arrangement genuinely will not fit between the table and the cabinet.
Dinner is the other half of a Bellmawr anniversary, and it almost never happens in Bellmawr. Couples here go one of three ways. The first is Collingswood, ten minutes up the road, whose Haddon Avenue restaurant row is the reason South Jersey people drive to a dry borough on a Saturday night — Nunzio Ristorante Rustico, Sagami and Zeppoli are the names that come up most often, and the row is built almost entirely of small rooms where you bring your own wine. The second is Haddonfield's Kings Highway, the same direction as Florist Inhaddonfieldnj at 24 Ellis Street. The third is over the Walt Whitman Bridge into Philadelphia, which from the Bellmawr interchange is a genuinely short drive: Center City hotels like The Rittenhouse, the Four Seasons in the Comcast tower, Loews Philadelphia on Market Street and the Hilton at Penn's Landing are all within half an hour of 08031, and an anniversary night in town with flowers waiting in the room is a well-worn South Jersey tradition. Be honest with yourself about which of the three it is, because it changes the delivery completely.
A word of caution about sending flowers to a restaurant, since it is the request we most often talk people out of. The Collingswood rooms are small — that is their charm and their constraint. A table for two in a thirty-seat dining room has no space for a vase, the staff are running a full service, and handing an arrangement to a host stand at seven o'clock on a Saturday creates a problem for everyone including the couple, who then carry it to the car. If the point is for flowers to be part of the evening, send them to the house in the afternoon so they are there when the couple is getting ready, and let the restaurant do the restaurant's job. If the evening is a hotel night across the bridge, that is different: a Philadelphia property will take a delivery for a registered guest, but it becomes a Philadelphia delivery routed through that city's shops, and the name on the reservation has to match the name on the order or the front desk will not release it.
