The closest hospital bed to Bala Cynwyd is barely outside the township line. Lankenau Medical Center occupies a campus at 100 East Lancaster Avenue in Wynnewood, about two miles from the 19004 centroid, and the drive from the Bala Ave block runs on ordinary township streets — out Montgomery Avenue, or down Wynnewood Road — with no interchange, no bridge and no stretch of the Schuylkill Expressway involved. That is why get-well is the most dependable category on this grid: the one thing that wrecks hospital deliveries in most markets, a highway between the shop and the patient, is absent here. What replaces it as the real obstacle is the campus itself. Lankenau keeps its inpatient floors, its medical office buildings and the Lankenau Heart Institute on the same ground behind one Lancaster Avenue address, so an order that says nothing but the hospital name can land at an information desk and stop moving. Give the studio three things and it does not: the patient's full name as the hospital has it registered, the room number if the family has passed it along, and the floor or unit in whatever words they used on the phone. When only the name is available, the shops here phone the hospital's own desk to place the patient rather than guessing at a tower.
Past Lankenau, the radius takes in most of the region's serious medicine. Bryn Mawr Hospital sits at 130 South Bryn Mawr Avenue, a straight run west on Lancaster Avenue. Across the Schuylkill, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center at 51 North 39th Street is the trauma hospital most Lower Merion emergencies actually reach, and the University City campus beyond it holds the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on Spruce Street, the Pavilion on Civic Center Boulevard and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia at 3401 Civic Center Boulevard; CHOP also runs a full hospital campus out in King of Prussia now, which for a Gladwyne or Penn Valley family is often the shorter drive of the two. Jefferson's hospitals sit downtown around 11th and Walnut with Magee Rehabilitation nearby, Temple is up North Broad, and the Old York Road medical cluster in East Falls and Elkins Park is reachable over the top of the city. Further out along the Main Line Health corridor — Paoli, Riddle in Media, the rehabilitation hospital in Malvern — the drive grows, so order earlier in the day for those. And when the stay turns long, switch the gift: a plant sent to the house in Bala, Cynwyd, Belmont Hills, Merion Station, Narberth, Wynnewood or Gladwyne outlasts three rounds of cut stems and greets somebody on the day they finally come home. Sign the card with your full name. People on painkillers lose track of first names fast, and an unsigned bouquet becomes a small puzzle at a moment when nobody has patience for puzzles.
