Residentially, Alvin splits into three delivery problems and they are not interchangeable. The old grid — Sealy, House, Dumble, Taylor, Hill and Magnolia — is the easy version: short blocks, deep shaded porches, street parking that works, and a driver who can find the house from the number alone. The newer subdivisions are the opposite. Magnolia Creek and Samara are recent builds in 77511, and out in 77578 the Manvel and Iowa Colony streets are newer still; on both, a mapping pin regularly lands in a field or on a lot that did not exist when the map data was cut, so a section or phase, a cross street and a phone number save the delivery. Third are the rural routes — the FM 528 and FM 1462 stretches, the roads out toward Liverpool 77577, Danbury 77534, Hillcrest and the Algoa side — where the mailbox and the front door can be a quarter mile apart and the useful note is which drive to take and whether a gate is latched.
Then there is the weather, which in Alvin is not a footnote. This town holds the United States record for rainfall in 24 hours: 43 inches on 25-26 July 1979, when Tropical Storm Claudette parked overhead and more than 6,000 residents had to leave their homes. Rain here arrives in quantities that make a cellophane sleeve on a doorstep a bad idea, and the summer version of the same problem is heat — an August afternoon on the upper Gulf Coast will cook an unattended arrangement on a sunny step in under an hour. For a birthday that is meant to be a surprise, the practical instructions are the same in either season: give us a mobile number for the recipient or a neighbour, tell us whether there is a shaded side door or a covered carport, and if nobody will be home until evening, say so and we will aim the run later rather than leave flowers to wilt in the driveway. Party deliveries have their own quirk. Alvin birthdays land at National Oak Park at 118 South Magnolia — eight acres with the Rotary Pavilion, the skate park, the National Oak Tree itself and the trailhead of the Hike and Bike Trail — and at the Bayou Wildlife Zoo at 5050 FM 517, an 80-acre tram-and-feed park that has hosted a great many Alvin kids' birthdays. Neither has a front desk, so a park or zoo drop needs a pavilion or gate name plus a cell number for whoever is setting up. In fall, Froberg's Farm at 3601 West Highway 6, farming this ground since 1936, runs the corn maze and pumpkin patch from the last weekend of September into the first weekend of November, and birthday parties follow it out there too.
